🌿 Beyond the Price Tag – Episode 2

Looking Beyond the Price

Price is easy to compare. Value takes a little more thought.

In our first episode of “Beyond the Price Tag”, we spoke about how every product has a story.
Today, let’s take the conversation a little further.
When we shop, one of the first things we naturally look at is the price.
And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.
We all have budgets. We all want to make sensible choices. Comparing prices is a natural part of shopping.
But sometimes, when two products look similar and have very different prices, we may be tempted to ask only:
“Why should I pay more?”
Perhaps there is another question worth asking:
“What am I actually getting for the price I am paying?”

A Photograph Tells Only Part of the Story

Today, so much of our shopping happens through photographs.
We see the colour.
We see the design.
We see the overall appearance.
And, of course, we see the price.
But a photograph cannot always tell us everything.
Take a beautiful textile, for example.
Two fabrics may look quite similar on a screen. But when we actually touch them, we may notice differences in their texture, softness, weight, fall and finish.
The same applies to many other products.
Sometimes the details are small:
The quality of the material
The finishing
The workmanship
The comfort
The durability
The usefulness
The thought that has gone into the design
These things may not always be immediately visible.
And that is why I believe it is worth looking a little closer before making a choice.

Price and Value Are Not the Same Thing
One of the things I have learnt over the years is that price and value are two different ideas.
Price is what we pay.
Value is what we feel we receive in return.
And value is personal.
For one person, value may mean a product that lasts for years.
For another, it may mean comfort.
Someone may value beautiful craftsmanship.
Someone else may value versatilityβ€”the ability to use the same product in several different ways.
And sometimes, value simply means finding something that brings us joy every time we use it.
So there cannot always be one universal definition of “value.”
The right question is:
“What matters to me?”

Similar Doesn’t Always Mean Identical
This is particularly important in today’s marketplace.
We often come across products that have a similar appearance. Sometimes they may even look almost identical in a photograph.
But similar appearance does not necessarily mean identical experience.
That doesn’t automatically make one product good and another bad.
Nor does a higher price automatically mean higher quality.
And a lower price does not automatically mean poor quality.
There can be many reasons why prices differβ€”materials, workmanship, sourcing, production methods, scale, finishing, design, and many other factors.
The important thing is to understand what you are looking for.

What Happens Before a Product Reaches CARE n Creation?
This is where my own experience comes in.
For more than 2 decades, I have worked with sellers and suppliers whom I have gradually come to know and trust.
That relationship has taught me something very important:
Trust is built through time.
When I select something for CARE n Creation, I don’t simply ask:
“Is this beautiful?”
I ask myself several other questions.
Would I recommend it to someone I care about?
Is the quality appropriate for its price?
Is it comfortable and useful?
Does it have something special?
Would I be happy to own it myself?
These questions help me decide whether something deserves a place in our collection.

We Don’t Believe in “Expensive = Better”
I want to make this very clear because it is an important part of the philosophy behind this series.
At CARE n Creation, we don’t believe that a higher price automatically means better quality.
We also don’t believe that a lower price automatically means poor quality.
Every product has its own story.
Every maker has a different process.
Every business works differently.
And every customer has different priorities.
Our purpose in “Beyond the Price Tag” is not to criticise another seller, compare ourselves with another marketplace, or tell you what you should buy.
It is simply to encourage a more thoughtful way of shopping.

Look. Feel. Understand. Then Choose.
Perhaps this can become our little shopping habit.
Before buying something, take a moment.
LOOK
Look beyond the photograph.
FEEL
If possible, experience the material, finish and comfort.
UNDERSTAND
Ask what matters to you and what you are actually receiving.
CHOOSE
Then make the decision that is right for you.
Sometimes that choice will be the more affordable option.
Sometimes it may be worth paying more for something that offers qualities that matter to you.
Both can be perfectly good choices.
The important thing is that the choice is informed and intentional.

Why This Matters to Me
As an educator, I have always believed that understanding gives us the power to make better choices.
That belief has followed me into CARE n Creation.
I don’t want our customers to simply buy because something is beautiful or because I recommend it.
I want them to understand why they are choosing it.
Because when we understand what we are buying, we appreciate it differently.
And perhaps, we also buy a little more thoughtfully.

🌿 A Little Reflection for You
The next time you see two products that look similar but have different prices, pause for a moment.
Instead of asking only:
“Which one is cheaper?”
try asking:
“What matters to me?”
“What am I looking for?”
“What value will this product bring to my life?”
There may not be one right answer.
And that’s perfectly okay.
Because Beyond the Price Tag isn’t about finding one universal answer.
It is about learning to look a little deeper.

What matters most to you when you shop?
Price | Quality | Comfort | Design | Durability | Trust
I’d genuinely love to hear your thoughts.
